Wassail on Goulburn Green

Enjoy a glass of mulled cider and some nibbles as you take the opportunity to greet old friends – or meet new ones if you’re newish to the village or have been simply too busy to get to know other locals.

A Wassail is a time-honoured, weird and wonderful community ceremony to welcome in good spirits and scare away the not-so-good ones to keep the trees in robust health and encourage a great crop. We’ll be pouring warmed cider over the roots of the trees and hanging cider-soaked toast in the branches to attract the good spirits (and the robins!).

Bring pots, pans and sticks as we need to make as much noise as we all can to scare away the evil spirits. The Wassail chant will help – and of course lots of merriment, music, and more mulled cider. Dress warm and wild, crazy hats and funny clothing encouraged.

There’s no charge, but we’ll be passing around a bucket for cash donations to cover the cost of the refreshments (for the humans as well as the trees).

Please arrive in plenty of time for us to start promptly at 4.30pm.

Park in the church car park and ise the loo in the Hamilton Room if needs must.
