Local Government Reorganisation

Government decides Surrey will be served by two unitary councils

The government has confirmed its decision that will reshape the future of local government in Surrey.

From April 2027, the current two-tier system of Surrey County Council and 11 district and borough councils will be replaced by two new unitary councils – East Surrey and West Surrey – each responsible for all local services in their area.

Government has stated that this is a once in a generation reform will see stronger local councils in charge of all local services, equipped to drive economic growth, improve local public services, and lead and empower their communities and ultimately it will help improve living standards.

Between now and April 2027, at which point East Surrey will become Buckland’s unitary council, Mole Valley District Council and Surrey County Council will continue to serve Buckland. If you sometimes wonder which of SCC and MVDC you need to contact please refer to the poster below!
